[Qualifying notes]

Grid: MS, JM, JT, KR, RS, FA, RB, JB, GF, TS, CK, NH, DC, FM, JV, MW, CA, NK, RD, TM.

I asked yesterday about MS’s engine problem in Friday practice; I’m told that it was an alternator problem, which meant it could be fixed without receiving a 10-grid spot penalty.

So this is MS’s 46th pole, one short of Ayrton Senna’s record.

Track temperature 47°C; air temp 34°C; wind 1.3m/s; humidity 45%; pressure 985.7mBar.

MS leads everyone away for the formation lap …and they form up on the grid

01/70: One of the Red Bull’s got away well
There’s bodywork flying in Turn 1 … looks like FA?
CK rolled in T1 – he’s out of the car OK
DC also off after ripping his front wheel off on FA’s wing that was lying on the track! That’s both Red Bull cars out on the first lap

02: FA and RB both pit
TM also pits

03: Replay shows that CK’s contact was with JV

04: MS, KR, JM, JT, RS, JB, TS, NH; retirements: CK & DC.
RB in P16; FA in P17, with only TM behind him

05: KR closing in on MS

06: MS fastest lap 1:21.673

07: KR f/lap 1:21.610
MS lead 1.2s

08: KR f/lap 1:21.488

09: MS f/lap 1:21.479
ITV-F1 interview with CK – doesn’t know who hit him (it was JV)

10/70: KR f/lap 1:21.238; gap now 0.7s
MS, KR, JM, JT, RS, JB, TS, NH; RB=15; FA=17

11: McLaren team getting ready … KR pits first! 8.5s stop. Rejoins in P5

12: FA finally passes RD, and it took a fairly forceful pass

13: JT pits from P4; 7.0s; rejoins in P6

14: RB closes right up on NK on the main straight … and almost runs into the back of him into T1
RB passes NK for P13

15: MS pits from P1; RS also pits from P3
ITV-F1 pit team report that JT has rear damage (broken difuser?) which will give him problems with downforce

18: ITV-F1 say JM hit a generator on his way to the grid and may have damaged the McLaren’s nose

19: JM putting in good sector times, building a gap ready for his pit stop

20/70: JM, MS, KR, JB, RS, JT, TS, NH; JV=11; RB=13; FA=14
JM f/lap 1:21.237

22: TS pits from P7
McLaren getting ready for JM
TM pits again

23: JM pits from P1; 9.9s stop; rejoins in P3, right behind KR

24: JB pits from P4; GF pits too
ITV-F1 pit crew: does JB has brake problems?

25: MS just 0.7s ahead of KR
Yet to pit: NH, FM, JV & MW

26: FM pits from P7
RB runs wide on the last corner; GF passes him for P12

27: FA pits from P13; 9.4s … lots of paper(?) flying as he exits the box

28: NH and JV both pit
Replay shows FA’s team pulling paper out of the air duct but not putting it clear of the car, so FA drives over it as he exits – doh!

29: RD pulls off and stops

30/70: MS, KR, JM, RS, JT, JB, MW, NH; RB=11; FA=14
MW pits from P7 – last one to stop

32: KR still just 0.6s behind MS
FM exits pits and makes KR tide a wider line through T1

33: ITV-F1 report FM’s Sauber sounding sick

34: JT pits from P5

35: RB pits from P10; rejoins behind JV but inches ahead of FM

36: RS pits from P4; 6.8s stop; retains his place ahead of JT

37: MS pits from P1; KR finally released to put in some fast laps … except McLaren are getting ready

38: KR pits from P1 … short filled … rejoins ahead of MS … good pit strategy by McLaren

39: KR leads MS by 7.1s
JM leads; he’s running a different strategy to teammate KR

40/70: KR lead now 9.8s over MS
JM, KR, MS, RS, JT, JB, NH, TS; RB=11; FA=12; retirements: CK, DC & RD

41: KR f/lap 1:21.219
A McLaren is slowing … but it’s JM this time!

42: JM pits … and the team tell him it’s over
ITV-F1 report both McLarens have had problems with the gearbox

44: GF runs wide, through the kitty litter and rejoins, but that lets MW through

45: FM pits – lots of smoke from the right bank of the engine – he’s pushed into the garage
KR, MS, RS, JT, JB, NH, TS, MW; RB=10; FA=11; retirements: CK, DC, RD & JM
FM still in the car as the mechanics investigate the engine problem

48: KR lead now ~24.7s over MS; RS closing in on his brother
JB pits from P5; 7.6s; rejoins in P6, behind NH

49: KR pits from P1; rejoins still ahead of MS … and MS still has to stop again

50/70: KR, MS, RS, JT, JB, NH, TS, MW; RB=10; FA=11; retirements: CK, DC, RD & JM (+FM?)

51: TS pits from P8; rejoins in P9, behind GF

52: ITV-F1 report Sauber have replaced a coil and sent FM out; apparently JV has the same problem
GF pits from P8, handing the position back to TS who has just been lapped by KR
Replay shows KR gesticulate at GF

53: JT pits from P4
NH putting in personal fastest laps – must be pitting soon

54: MS about to lap “teammate” RB
CA pits and into the garage; the engine cover is off but they may try to get him back out

55: RS pits from P3
NH pits too; rejoins just ahead of teammate MW

56: JV pits
MW pits

57: Ferrari getting ready for RB … pits from P10
FA pits too, and leaves right on RB’s tail
GF runs wide, through the kitty litter again – same corner as before

58: MS pits from P2; 5.1s; looked a bit slow leaving the box

59: RS trying to lap RB but no sign of blue flags – RS was closing on MS, so is this a deliberate attempt to hold him up?
JV pulls off and retires the Sauber

60/70: KR, MS, RS, JT, JB, NH, MW (+1 lap), TS; RB=10; FA=11
RS now 3.7s behind MS
Retirements: CK, DC, RD, JM, JV

61: CA touring round quite slowly; pits … and parks it in the garage

62: RS now just 2.9s off MS; KR’s lead 33.4s

64: TS on track for a single point … so James Allen (ITV-F1 commentator) can no longer describe him as “pointless”

65/70: RS has closed to 1.4s behind his big brother

67: RS is now very close but you can see the Toyota’s nose wobbling in the dirty air

68: RS shown 0.5s behind MS, but there’s nowhere to pass

69/70: KR, MS, RS, JT, JB, NH, MW (+1 lap), TS; GF=09; RB=10; FA=11; NK=12; TM=13; FM=14
Retirements: CK, DC, RD, JM, JV & CA
GF pits from P9! Just a splash and dash, and he wasn’t going to get any points anyway

70/70: KR wins with a 35.5s lead over MS, who is just 0.5s ahead of RS.
JT takes P4, 18.0s behind RS.
JB P5; 4.6s off JT
FA fails to get any points, but the championship is fairly safe

Parc ferme: even MS is looking warm

KR takes the top step of the podium, in the middle of a Schumacher sandwich

Track temperature = 50°C; air temp = 34°C; wind = 1.8m/s; humidity = 35%; pressure = 988.7mbar

Raikkonen is first out as a result of yet another DNF – Sector 1 = 28.5; S2=58.2; S3/lap=1:20.891
Webber – S1=29.0; S2=59.7; 1:23.495 = provisional Position 2; 2.6s slower than KR
Doornbos – locks up in Turn 1; S1=29.8; S2=61.2; 1:25.5 = pP3
Monteiro has returned to the pits after his out lap – no time set; he had an engine change earlier so he was going to be penalised 10 grid positions
Karthikeyan – S1=29.7; S2=60.1; 1:25.057 = pP3

Batch 2 = JV, JT, CA, TS, NH
Villeneuve – S1=28.9; S2=59.5; 1:22.866 = pP2, 0.6s ahead of MW
Trulli – S1=28.5; S2=58.3; 1:20.839 = pP1 by 0.052s – he made up a lot of time in S3
Albers – S1=29.2; S2=60.7; 1:24.443 = pP5
Sato – S1=28.5 (up on JT); S2=58.8; 1:21.787 = pP3, after a good S1
Heidfeld – S1=28.6; S2=58.9; 1:22.086 = pP4

Batch 3 = RB, CK, FM, DC, RS
Barrichello – S1=28.6; S2=58.4 (0.063 off JT); 1:21.158 = pP3, he lost time in S3
Klien – S1=28.9; S2=59.0; 1:21.937 = pP5
Massa – S1=28.9 (same as teammate JV); S2=59.4; 1:22.565 = pP7, just ahead of JV
Coulthard – S1=28.9; S2=59.3; 1:22.279 = pP7, 2-spots behind teammate CK
R.Schumacher – S1=28.8; S2=58.4, a good S2; 1:20.964 = pP3, with good S2+S3 times

Batch 4 = MS, GF, JB, JM, FA
M.Schumacher – S1=28.3 (ahead of JT); S2=57.5; 1:19.882 = pP1 … but didn’t he blow an engine in practice yesterday? (And he’s probably fuelled light)
Fisichella – S1=28.6; S2=58.4; 1:21.333 = pP6
Button – S1=28.5; S2=58.4; 1:21.302 = pP6 … that’s a shame
Montoya – S1=28.4; S2=58.1; 1:20.779 = pP2, 0.897s behind MS
Alonso – (yesterday was his 24th birthday) S1=28.5; S2=58.1; runs wide in the final turn; 1:21.141 = P6

  1. M.Schumacher (Ferrari) 1:19.882 – first Ferrari pole of 2005

  7. R.Barrichello (Ferrari) 1:21.158
  8. J.Button (BAR) 1:21.302
  9. G.Fisichella (Renault) 1:21.333

  13. D.Coulthard (Red Bull) 1:22.279
  14. F.Massa (Sauber) 1:22.565
  15. J.Villeneuve (Sauber) 1:22.866
  16. M.Webber (Williams) 1:24.495
  17. C.Albers (Minardi) 1:24.443
  18. N.Karthikeyan (Jordan) 1:25.057
