Belgian Grand Prix – Practice
Earlier practice session: Not raining but the track was wet.
Toccaccello and Albers both slid off in their Minardis, as did Pizzonia in the Williams.
Raikkonen was fastest with a time of 1:48.206
No-one out so far in this session.
Track temperature 23°C; air temp 20°C; wind 1.1m/s; humidity 89%; pressure 966.2mBar.
Liuzzi is first out, throwing up huge rooster tails of water. He’s loses it going in to Les Combes, smacks his Red Bull into the barriers and the red flags come out – session paused with only 4 minutes gone.
Liuzzi is OK. His car is being lifted away and you can see he was on intermediate tyres … why? Doornbos had just justed the circuit on full wets, which makes more sense.
Red flags removed at 1411 local time, but no-one looks keen to go out, oddly enough. The official F1 site says the practice session will still end at 1500hrs.
15mins gone: still no-one on track since Liuzzi’s accident.
17mins: Alonso is the next one to brave the weather. (He didn’t go out at all in the previous session.) He pits at the end of his out lap. Replay shows he was on dry-weather tyres!
25mins: Still no-one looking ready to go out.
35mins: Nothing but rain.
40mins: More coverage of the rain … and it’s still pouring down.
10 mins left: We have yet to see anyone complete a lap in this session … but then when you see the downpour and the rivers crossing the track, it’s no surprise.
6mins left: A couple of cars are firing up, but will they go out? (Nope.)
Unlike NASCAR, they will qualify tomorrow and race on Sunday even if it continues raining like this.
