US man shot dead on Florida plane
BBC NEWS reports that a man has been shot dead by a US air marshal. Apparently the plane had landed and they were in the airport when air marshals told him to stop.
“The passenger then reached into his carry-on bag, at which point, consistent with air marshal training, the air marshals took the appropriate actions. Shots were fired as the team attempted to subdue the subject,” the [homeland security department] spokesman said.
“Attempted to subdue” is a long way from “killed”, but anyway. (I understand that, if he really had a bomb, you don’t want to leave him any opportunity to detonate it.)
There’s obvious similarity to the British underground incident where armed police “subdued” a man by shooting him. An investigation found him to be unrelated to their intended target; I wonder if an investigation will show this (American) guy to be any more dangerous? Apparently “a woman with him said he was mentally ill, the Reuters news agency reported” so was he really a terrorist?
