Gun ban for Canada?

CBC reports that “Liberal Leader Paul Martin’s call to ban all handguns is getting mixed reviews, with opposition leaders and other interests questioning its usefulness in combating crime.”

Hmmm, you don’t say. Let’s introduce a law which is almost uninforcible, which criminalises owners of legal weapons, and which simply won’t have any noticable impact on the street violence. Don’t the politicians remember the fiasco of the gun registry that had to be abandoned not that long ago? It won’t work.

Plus I’m sure all the gang members (and other stupid kids) who have illegal guns (under the existing laws) will suddenly hand them over, because the penalty for murdering someone (or the possibility of being killed yourself) isn’t enough of a deterant.

If the police don’t have enough power now to deal with these criminals, then there’s something seriously wrong … but I don’t believe that’s the case. The problem is that kids (a) won’t help the police because they don’t trust them, (b) won’t help the police because they’re afraid of retaliation, and (c) think it’s cool to be part of an armed gang. These are social issues, not a lack of legislation.

  2. The great mystery to me is that Canadians complain about lax sentences for criminals, but are reluctant to vote for politicians promising tougher policing and sentencing. The Liberals come up with one crackpot, unworkable idea after another, rather than target criminals, and get themselves elected. (And their strategy will likely work this time again)

  4. Why ban the guns. It’s not going to stop the criminals from getting them!!! There is no point!!
