Big brother says “that’s fast enough”

CNN.com reports that “Canadian auto regulators are testing a system that would enforce speed limits by making it harder to push down the car’s gas pedal once the speed limit is passed, according to a newspaper report.” [The newspaper report is this Globe & Mail story, but you have to pay to read it, hence why I'm referring to the CNN article.]

It’s funny that CNN feel the need to explain Transport Canada is “the Canadian equivalent of the U.S. Department of Transportation” … in case that wasn’t self-evident. Aim for the lowest common demoninator, I guess.

I think a device that impedes a driver’s controls is a bad idea: there are times (albeit rarely) where it’s necessary to speed, to avoid an accident for example. Apparently they’re also testing a voice alarm and light system, which would be safer I think … although isn’t that what backseat drivers are for? :)

Why doesn’t the Transport Canada device just cut out the middle man and ask the driver to insert their credit card and driving license before starting their journey, and then it could automagically deduct money/points as applicable? :)
