Paging the sports injury department

I’ve been playing badminton for seven weeks now (after a five year gap!) and I definitely feel that I’m recovering (from the exhaustion) much quicker. My technique returned pretty quickly and the past couple of weeks I’ve been playing better and better opponents, until this week I was paired with someone a bit better than me against two of the top players … and we only lost 15-10.

Unfortunately I’m still picking up minor injuries – the nail of my left big toe is still totally black (bruised) and the right big toenail is starting to join in a little; my knees are holding up better than expected, although I get the occasional twinge in my right knee; and this week I tweeked my right elbow / forearm muscle – it really aches when I pick things up, but I’ll live. :) Next week is the last session until the new year, so I get a couple of weeks off to see if things sort themselves out.

There’s been talk of maybe our group swapping gym with another group … except they’re significantly better players … and this gym is right on my doorstep … so if the swap does happen (which many of us think is unlikely, but anyway let’s assume it does) do I travel to the other gym or join the really good guys? My technique is good enough (so I’ve been told) but my fitness just isn’t up to three hours of sustained top-level games yet.

The other thing (and the cardiologist I saw a while back warned me of this) is that I’m not losing any weight, which is part of the aim. Surely running around, almost non-stop, for three hours should do something? I stopped using the exercise bike when I started playing badminton because of my knees, but now it’s time to get back in the saddle. :)

  2. I forgot about my left shin – it’s bald! The gym where we play is quite really dusty so I find myself wiping my right trainer (i.e. the one I tend to push off with) on my left sock/shin to try to clean it – I do it so much (subconsciously) that people have already commented on my “quirk”!
