Top 10 Tech Challenges
There are a few techie things I’ve been putting off (other things taking priority) so here’s my New Year’s Top 10 Tech Challenges:
- Now that BlogTraffic has bitten the dust (why don’t they just find another programmer?), find another place to generate traffic for our blog – I’m already signed up with BlogClicker and BlogExplosion. [Update: now signed up with BlogAdvance too] [Update#2:BlogMad is accepting pre-release registration but doesn't have a go-live date (that I can see)]
- Finish reviewing/pruning my BlogRoll
- Configure TripWire on the server
- Update my technical/professional website – it’s been stagnant for a couple of months
- Work on a new layout for the blog – upgrading to WordPress v2 means the old ones need some work … including re-adding the hit counter and BlogExplosion’s “Rent My Blog” widget.
- Improve the spam filtering – I installed SpamAssassin a while back but I think it needs tweaking
- Fix the linking issue with the new Gallery v2 software
- Upgrade the server to FC4 – it’s been out for months, and FC5 is coming soon! [Done]
- Sort out Andy’s parents’ problems with their XP machines (biggest issue is the file sharing not working) [Done]
- Investigate the grinding noises coming from the games PC … before a fan dies and it cooks itself! [Done]

I also need to keep an eye on the laptop – for some reason it (well, the Windows auto-update thing) decided to download XP SP2 today … which sounds like a good thing, except it already had SP2 installed!!
#1) Good news: I think I’ve isolated the cause of the noise. Bad news: it’s the drive with all my CD collection on it.
I really hate Microsoft Windows!
In order to check out the PC, I had to unplug few things (so I could move the box) and I plugged them all back in before I powered it back up. Winblows decided I had installed a new device (it was actually a USB “plug and pray” cable) so it demanded that I reinstall the drivers … which meant finding the CD. Aaargh! Windows, Microsoft and Gates – you all suck!
And now Winblows won’t let me logout or shutdown! It won’t start the Task Manager, so I can’t see if there’s a hung process (which happens way too often). All that’s left is the OFF button.
If only my driving games ran under Linux, I would wipe Windows off that PC. It is such a sucky “operating system” … and how much do they charge for it?
I still can’t believe people run businesses that rely so heavily on such flimsy technology … all because they believe the Micro$oft marketing machine, or have no alternative because of the illegal monopoly.
Aaaargh!
