Unexpected downtime
I don’t know why it was down, but the web/blog server is back up.
Apparently it went offline about 3:30am. My Internet provider said they weren’t having any problems and that my modem was connected OK; the router’s logs didn’t show any problems, and nor did anything on the server. After spending an hour or so checking things out, I resorted to power cycling the modem and router, and rebooting the server.
Unfortunately, because I’d started investigating shuffling some disk space around on the operating system’s partition, the server didn’t want to boot at first. I resorted to a Knoppix live CD (basically a version of Linux that runs from a CD instead of the hard drive), so that I could make any changes – if the disk is in use (i.e. if I’d booted up as usual) then I might not have been able to modify it. In the end, all I had to do was re-create the partition that I’d deleted a couple of days ago. I might have another go at shuffling the 20Gb free space around another day, or maybe I’ll just leave it alone.
So, about 8½ hours later, we’re back up. It’s frustrating not to know what caused the outage (because if it happens again, I don’t have a fix other than resetting & rebooting) but at least it’s back up now.
