Friday Factoids (2006.08)

With February almost over, I thought I’d provide some February factoids:

  • As well as being Black History Month, February is Marfan Syndrome Awareness Month and National Children’s Dental Health Month in the USA.
  • Also listed (but not explained) are Responsible Pet Owner Month (so it’s OK to be irresponsible the rest of the year?), Sleep Safety Month (are there a lot of sleep-related injuries?) and Canned Food Month (buy it or eat it?).
  • Apparently the 2nd Monday in February is “Clean Out Your Computer Day”.
  • Did you know Feb 1st is National Baked Alaska Day and the 4th is National Stuffed Mushroom Day? Be sure to add it to your diary for next year!
  • I can’t believe we hadn’t heard of Drink Too Much Wine Day (Feb 18th) before!
  • The “Flying Scotsman” (steam locomotive) made its first run from London to Edinburgh on 24 February 1923.
  • Elizabeth II became Queen of the United Kingdom, of Canada, of Australia, of New Zealand, of Ceylon, of Pakistan and of South Africa on the death of her father, King George VI, on 6 February 1952. (Not her coronation, as some websites claim – that was 2 June 1953.)
  • Fidel Castro took the reigns in Cuba on 16 February 1959.

Neat new feature

I have wondering for ages (since I started my own blog) how people are supposed to handle comments – if you want to reply to a comment should you do it in the blog entry’s comments and/or via email to the person who posted? Well, I’ve found the answer!

By complete fluke (I was replying to “Fed up with Java, switching to a new language” – it’s funny) and discovered a “subscribe” option. A quick Google search later and I found the Subscribe to Comments 2.0 plugin for WordPress. It’s installed now, so all you have to do is select the tick-box (aka checkbox) and comments posted against your comment will be emailed to you! There’s even an option to “unsubscribe” if/when you want to turn this off.

Update: There’s an option to have the tick-box checked by default, which I’ll turn on – I suspect most people want to know if there’s a reply to their comment – and an option let anyone (not just a commenter) subscribe, which is off for now but I’ll probably turn it on in the new template/layout that I’m (slowly) working on.

Will the Crackberry addicts be cut off?

Today’s the day for the RIM v. NTP case in Virginia. Will the judge order RIM to shutdown its (US) network and leave millions of Blackberry users to go cold turkey?

There’s been talk of a (legal) workaround from RIM but I don’t think anyone’s seen what it is so it’s quite a leap of faith. Presumably IT managers throughout the USA have been looking at alternatives … or maybe there will actually be a huge sigh of relief if they’re free of (one of) their electronic shackles, if only for a short time?

Mind you, The Onion has a few suggestions on how to cope. :)

Personally I hope the case is thrown out, or at least delayed, because the US Patent Office has been saying for some time now that they’ll reject NTP’s claims … but don’t seem to be making much progress in actually doing that.
