Who’s a happy little server?
The coolant arrived today, so I filled up the server with green goo. It’s a good job I ordered two bottles – I emptied one straight in and then topped it off with a little distilled water.
It does make me wonder though – I filled the cooling system when I installed it last June, and I’ve topped it up once or twice since … so where’s all the fluid going???
(Yes, I’ve opened the case and there’s just the tiniest dribble, probably from where I over-filled it once.)

The coolant is mostly alcohol, right? Alcohol absorbs water (1l of alcohol plus 1l of water does not add up to 2l of liquid). Probably not all that much, though. Maybe it’s the same reason that if I leave contact lenses in a tightly-sealed case for too long, I’ll go and find them dried out. Fluids just crave travel…
I don’t understand – I replied to Esteban’s comment, but when it didn’t appear I replied again and then WordPress told me I’d already said that! So where’s my comment gone??
What I said was:
It’s 95% propylene glycol*, 3% water and 2% “proprietary additives”.(*Synonyms: 1,2-Propanediol; 1,2-Dihydroxypropane; Methylethylene glycol; Trimethyl glycol; 1,2-Propylene glycol; monopropylene glycol; propane-1,2-diol; alpha-propyleneglycol; dowfrost; PG 12; sirlene; solar winter ban; Propanediol)
Thanks for your explanation; I’d rather know it’s being absorbed than think it’s escaping into the other other components. Still, I guess that means I’ll need to continue topping up the cooling system regularly.
Tell me what you're thinking...
