Are you where you thought you’d be?

After badminton yesterday, over a pint, we were discussing getting older – “is this where you pictured you’d be at this age, back when you were 18?” My answer was no, it’s not, but then that’s partly because I didn’t really think about turning 40 when I was 18.

I remember starting my first job after university and saying how I’d always be a techie, hacking out code, and I’d never want to be a manager; well, although I still mess around with my Linux server at home and so on, I don’t really miss coding all that much. I’m certainly enjoying project management, and my new job has doubled that – I’m working with a great team, and the new techniques I’m learning are really interesting.

If you had asked me in 1999 (or any time before then) if I’d ever move abroad, the answer would definitely have been no. Even at my emigration party some people had a hard time believing I was really leaving England.

So no, I’m not where I thought I’d be at this point in my life, but that’s not a bad thing – I’m not sure what the future holds, but I’m sure it’ll be interesting!

p.s. Remind me to kick myself later – I forgot to sign up for the summer badminton clinics, and now it’s fully booked. :(

p.p.s. I forgot to mention what it was that reminded me this morning to post this – it’s 18 years ago today that I graduated from university. Ouch!
