Canadian Grand Prix – Race

An hour before the race, and there’s no update to the grid: FA, GF, KR, JT, MS, NR, JM, JB, RB, FMa, JV, CK, NH, RS, VL, DC, MW, SS, TM, CA, TS, FMo. [see my notes from yesterday's qualifying]

MW claims his fast lap was blocked by teammate NR; no response from the stewards.

Accusations that Williams are using flexi-wings; the stewards have not found any fault in either car in previous races.

Looks like it could be a lucky weekend for Williams … or at least Rosberg.

30mins to the start; the cars are on track, making final checks and adjustments.

TSN’s coverage focuses on JV, of course – it’s a shame he’s still not grown into those overalls. :)

The cars are beginning to form up on the grid, with 20 minutes before the start.

5mins to the start; track temperature 47°C; air temp 29°C; wind 0.8m/s; humidity 33%

DC’s been relegated to the back of the grid for an engine.

Oh dear – Kerri’s just reminded me – we’re stuck with the TSN commentators for this race; they’re not a patch on the ITV guys. :(

FA leads everyone away on the formation lap.

FA’s starting to back up the pack as he comes out of the chicane – no-one wants to sit on the grid too long.

MS has held up the rest of the grid whilst the Renaults sit with the engines getting very hot – that should be a penalty!

Lap 01/70: KR passes GF for P2 before Turn 1

JM passes MS for P6

JB’s having a look at MS too

JV passes FMa for P9

Yellow flag for ..?

Ah, replay shows CA being taken off by his teammate – d’oh!

02: FA, KR, GF, JT, NR, JM, MS, JB

JM battling with NR – JM should take him – no, they collide! NR spins into the wall

Safety Car deployed

So much for my comment earlier about it being a lucky weekend for Rosberg – whoops

JM pits for a new nose cone

03 [SC]: FA, KR, GF, JT, MS, JB, JV, FMa

SC in at the end of this lap

Car 2 (GF) under investigation for a jump start

04: FMo’s Super Aguri goes bang at the end of the back straight

05: GF sets fastest lap 1:17.966

06: FA f/lap 1:17.382

Drive through penalty for GF for a jump start

07: FA f/lap 1:16.883

08: GF takes his drive-through penalty – rejoins in P5, between MS and JB

10/70: KR f/lap 1:16.802

JM cuts the chicane and passes RS for P15, but correctly drops back to P16

12: JM has passes RS cleanly this time

KR just inches from the rear of FA as the come up the back straight – FA stays ahead through the chicane

13: RB pits from P13 … and they’re pushing him into the garage

14: Retirements: CA, NR, FMo, RB

JM pulls his McLaren off track near the pitlane exit – he slapped the rear right against “champions wall”

17: FA f/lap 1:16.277 – will he pit soon? Before KR?

KR is still under 1s behind FA

GF is 0.9s behind MS, so there’s lots of pressure on the Renault pit crew

18: FA has opened the gap over KR to 1.1s

19: GF has closed to 0.6s behind MS

20/70: FA, KR, JT, MS, GF, JB, FMa, JV; Retirements: CA, NR, FMo, RB, JM

21: FA f/lap 1:15.957

KR personal f/lap 1:16.032

22: DC has a good run at RS along the main straight – he locks up but stays ahead in Turn 1 – but RS re-takes P12

KR f/lap 1:15.841

23: FA pits from P1 – 8.1s stop – rejoins ahead of JT

25: MS passes JT on the back straight, before the chicane

26: KR pits from P1 – 12.6s – long stop because of a problem with the rear right

JT & GF both pit

27: RS off at the hairpin but he’s found reverse and rejoins

RS pits to get the car checked out – 9.9s stop

28: FA lead is now 5.8s

JB pits – rejoins in P10

30/70: Replay shows MS making contact with the wall but he seems to be running OK

Yet to pit: MS, FMa, JV, NH, DC – are they one-stopping?

31: RS takes a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane – rejoins in P15

32: Pit-car radio for JV: “you’re doing good!” – he’s in P5 but has yet to pit

33: MS pits from P3 – 7.9s – that’s got to be a 2-stop

34: JV pits from P5 – 7.5s, so he’s still on a 2-stop strategy too

35/70: MS cuts the chicane

NH pits; only FMa yet to stop – will he do an Alesi and run out of fuel?

37: FMa pits from P4 – long fuel stop – he’s definitely 1-stopping

39: FA has a 7.8s lead over KR, who in turn is 22.6s ahead of MS

40/70: FA, KR, MS, GF, JT, FMa, JV, NH; JB=9; DC=11

Everyone from FMa down has been lapped

42: TS posts his personal f/lap 1:20.552 – that’s about 3s off FA’s current pace

43: JV has closed up on FMa but can he pass the Ferrari?

44: Another onboard shot of FA having problems as the Renault’s rear-end steps out – he’s going to have to pit for new tyres very soon

45: MS has problems making around the hairpin – his Ferrari’s rear-end stepped out too

Track temp 48°C; air 32°C – warmer than it was an hour ago

47: KR’s turn to fight his car into a corner – he took to the grass but recovered

49: JV is still under 0.5s behind FMa but he’s not looking for a way around

JT pits from P5 – 6.9s stop

50/70: FA pits from P1 – 6.9s – rejoins still with a cushion ahead of MS

51: RS spins in T10 (the hairpin)

KR’s McLaren struggles around T10 over the marbles too

52: GF runs onto the grass as his Renault struggles around T1

53: GF pits from P4 – 6.6s

54: KR pits from P1 – he’s stalled it! – 14.6s – rejoins only a couple of car lengths ahead of MS

JB pits too

55: FA, KR, MS, GF, FMa, JV, NH, JT; retirements: CA, NR, FMo, RB, JM

56: NH pits from P7

57: JV pits

58: DC pits from P9

MS pits from P3 – 6.0s stop

60: Big impact for JV – he’s smashed his BMW into a huge Honda sign at T1

Safety Car deployed

JV’s out the car but there’s a lot of mess on track

Replay shows he was trying to turn but he was on the marbles, so the car just kept going straight

I wonder if the FIA will ask (insist?) that the circuit be improved for next year?

61[SC]: RS spins again at the hairpin, under the Safety Car – rejoins

62: Pit-car radio for DC – “don’t use first gear”

63: SC in at the end of this lap

Pit-car for CK: “Button is not good on the restart – have a go at him”

64: Green flag

RS pits and his pushed into the garage

65: FA, KR, MS, GF, FMa, JT, NH, JB; DC=10; retirements: CA, NR, FMo, RB, JM, RS, JV

66: The SC bunched up the field, so now FA’s lead is 4.9s over KR, and KR is 2.7s ahead of MS

67: DC is all over the gearbox of his teammate … but then CK runs wide in the hairpin and DC takes P9

68: Pit-car for DC: “let’s have Jenson”

DC runs alongside JB up the back straight – he’s half a car back as they approach the chicane – but JB breaks first and DC takes P8

69: KR runs wide on the marbles in the hairpin and MS passes him for P2!

70/70: TS has stopped at the side of the track on the final lap

Replay shows he hit the wall and ripped a wheel off!

FA takes the chequered flag – he backed off ~2s, so MS was only 2.1s behind at the end

Provisional results:

P1=FA, 2=MS, 3=KR, 4=GF, 5=FMa, 6=JT (+1 lap), 7=NH, 8=DC; 9=JB, 10=SS, 11=CK, 12=MW, 13=VL (+2 laps), 14=TM (+4 laps), 15=TS (+6 laps)
