Air temperature 32°C; track 48°C; wind 1.3m/s

[My notes on qualifying]
There are engine change penalties for Albers & Trulli; Yamamoto is also penalised because he changed to the T-car (spare car) after an accident in practice.

Provisional Grid: KR, MS, FM, JB, GF, RB, FA, RS, PdlR, DC, MW, CK, JV, NR, NH, VL, TS, TM, SS, JT, CA, SY.
It appears that SY (Sakon Yamamoto in the Super Aguri) is starting from the pit lane.

Formation lap:
KR leads the pack away; RB a little slow off the grid, but everyone’s away safely; SY awaits the start from the pit lane.

01/67: KR leads MS into Turn 1
JB passed by both Renaults before T1
JB re-passes FA
Apparently SY stalled leaving the pit lane
RS clips DC in the hairpin, launching the Red Bull into the air but he recovers
NR has gone off across the gravel and into the wall

03: KR fastest lap 1:17.383
JV, RS, NH all pit
They’re clearing NR’s Williams under yellow flags

04: KR 1:16.780
PdlR is off in the gravel – looks like he pulled the McLaren off track with a technical problem
SY is coasting along, looking down in the cockpit

05/67: KR 1:16.475
SY pits and retires

06: KR, MS, FM, JB, GF, FA, MW, RB

07: NH lapped – not a good showing for the BMW team in their home race
VL kicks up the dust as he runs a little wide

08: JB is ~5secs behind the Ferraris

09: JT has passed DC for P11

10/67: MS f/lap 1:16.455
McLaren preparing for KR (because PdlR has already retired)

11: KR pits from P1 – 15.2s stop – only ~7s of fuel but a problem with changing one of the wheels – rejoins in P8(!) behind RB
NH pits a 2nd time, and is pushed into the garage

12: Replay shows the McLaren team held KR because of a problem with the rear right wheel

13: NH is still in the car as the BMW mechanics work on his car

14: RB is struggling to pass MW for P6

15: MS, FM, JB, GF, FA, MW, RB, KR
NH is out of the car
Retirements: NR, SY, PdlR, NH

16: JB is now ~10s off FM
MW has RB and KR right on his tail, although MW is closing on FA
RB makes a nice move on MW in the hairpin

17: JB pits from P3 – 8.9s stop – that a 2-stop? – he rejoins behind KR

18: MS f/lap 1:16.357
Interview with NH: brake was getting longer and longer
RB has got FA firmly in his sights

19: RB is harrying FA for P4
The Ferraris have a 20s lead over GF
RB pits from P5 – 9.2s stop
Ferrari getting ready for a stop

20: FM pits from P2
RB pulls the Honda off track – flames from the rear of the car!
GF pits from P3 – 9.8s stop – rejoins behind KR

21: MS pits from P1 – 8.8s stop – rejoins just feet ahead of FM
FA pits – reduce front wing – 8.0s stop – rejoins ahead of VL

22: DC pits from P11 – 6.7s stop

23: Front-runners yet to pit: MW, CK, JT
ITV-F1 interview RB: terrible start but having a good race

25/67: MS, FM, MW, JB, KR, CK, GF, JT; FA=9
Retirements: NR, SY, PdlR, NH, RB
JV running in P17/last, the only driver not on the lead lap

26: RS passes SS in the hairpin … and manages not to make contact this time
CK pits from P6 – 8.3s stop

27: JB is ~24s off the leaders
VL pits from P9 – 7.9s stop

29: MW pits from P3 – 8.3s stop
KR makes his 2nd stop – 7.2s
JT pits too – rejoins just ahead of teammate RS

30/67: MS, FM, JB, GF, MW, FA, KR, CK
RS pits – rejoins alongside FM – drops in beind him, now 1 lap down
Thanks to the pit stops, only 5 laps after I said JV was the only one lapped, RS in P12 is the first of those lapped
At this rate, MS will lap almost the whole field, including FA!

33: RS under investigation for speeding in the pit lane
JB waving his hand – a lapped car (TM?) isn’t obeying the blue flags
JV off at the final corner – into the wall quite heavily but he’s walking away
Replay: looks like a failure on the BMW that meant JV couldn’t make the turn

35/67: MS, FM, JB, GF, MW, FA, KR, CK
Retirements: NR, SY, PdlR, NH, RB, JV
MS & FM have clearly backed off the pace – RS has caught up to them and could unlap himself

36: “Drive through penalty for car 7 (RS) for speeding in the pit lane”

37: RS takes his penalty
ITV-F1 interview JV: he’s OK and not sure why the accident happened

38: JB is ~26s behind FM, and ~11s ahead of GF
Closest battles are MW 0.6s behind GF, and JT 0.8s off CK

40/67: MS, FM, JB, GF, MW, FA, KR, CK
MW dives down the inside of GF and takes P4
TS pits from 16/last and retires

41: Renault mechanics in the pit lane preparing for a stop
GF pits from P5 – 7.9s
DC pits from P10 – 9.4s

42: JB pits from P3 – 9.1s – rejoins behind KR
TM under investigation for ignoring blue flags

43: “Drive through penalty for car 18 (TM) – ignoring waved blue flags”
MW puts in his personal f/lap 1:17.196

44: MW personal f/lap 1:16.812
FA pits from P4 – 8.2s

45/67: FM pits from P2 – 8.0s stop
TM serves his penalty

46: MS pits from P1 – 7.9s stop – that stop looks a lot more calm and organised than JB’s last one
JT passes CK for P6

47: SS runs wide, across the gravel and grass, and finally finds the black stuff again – that hands P13 to CA

48: RS tries to make a move on VL for P10 but VL stays ahead, even after being pushed wide
CK pits, as does RS – that’s Ralf’s 4th visit to the pit lane today!

49: MW pits from P3 – 7.9s stop – rejoins in P6, behind JT (JT has only stopped once so far though)

50/67: MS, FM, KR, JB, JT, MW, FA, GF
CA & SS both pit

51: How long before KR has to make his 3rd stop?

52: JT pits from P5 – 6.6s stop – rejoins in P8, behind GF

54: RS makes an untidy pass on DC and takes P10

55/67: MS, FM, KR, JB, MW, FA, GF, JT
DC now passed by VL

56: KR pits from P3 – 6.6s stop – rejoins alongside MW – they run side by side into the corner but KR comes out ahead, in P4

57: MS, FM, JB, KR, MW, FA, GF, JT
FM lets RS unlap himself – just has to pass his brother

58: KR puts in the overall fastest Sector 2 time – he’s only 0.5sec behind JB
KR pulls alongside JB – the Honda just can’t match the McLaren, and KR takes P3

59: RS closes up on MS
MW is dropping rapidly down the field – there must be a problem with the Williams

60/67: MS, FM, KR, JB, FA, GF, JT, CK
White flags follow MW around the track, warning other drivers of a slow-moving car

61: MW crawls into the pit lane and the team release fire extinguishers to cool the engine
RS has unlapped himself

62: FA ran wide, across the gravel – rejoins still ahead of teammate GF, who is playing rear-gunner and holding off JT

64: ITV-F1 report Renault have put their Michelin tyres on display to show how badly the Michelins are blistering

65/67: MS, FM, KR, JB, FA, GF, JT, CK; Retirements: NR, SY, PdlR, NH, RB, JV, TS, MW
JT is still pushing GF for P6

66: KR is lapping over 1s/lap faster than the Ferraris, but he’s 16.5s behind FM

67 / final lap: FA posts his personal f/lap (1:17.256) but it’s too little and way too late – he should have been doing that an hour ago!

MS takes the chequered flag
FM just 0.7s behind his team leader
KR takes P3, ~12.5s behind FM
JB is 4th; FA=5, GF=6, JT=7, CK=8

[...] BMW Sauber’s test driver, Robert Kubica, will be the first Pole to compete in an F1 Grand Prix this weekend as he’s standing in for Jacques Villeneuve. Seems straightforward enough (JV had an accident in the German Grand Prix last weekend) but the announcement from BMW (”We have a decision for this race and will evaluate the situation afterwards. There are no guarantees in life.”) sounds like this may be more permanent – will JB be back this season or next? [...]
