Michael Schumacher says he was unfairly penalised yesterday, and I agree. If any other driver had passed two cars under red flags they would have been disqualified, whereas MS only got a time penalty for qualifying, so yes he wasn’t treated fairly – he certainly get away with a lesser penalty than normal.

The grid is almost as I calculated yesterday other than a penalty for Scott Speed has dropped him one place:
KR, FM, RB, PdlR, MW, RS, GF, JT, RK, NH, MS, DC, CK, JB, FA, TM, VL, NR, TS, SS, SY, CA

Track temperature 19°C; air 17°C; wind 0.9m/s
More importantly the track is quite damp

Pre-race:
Massa spins his Ferrari on his way to the grid!

Formation lap:
Raikkonen leads everyone away, except for Klien who is still in the pit lane
De la Rosa spins while warming up his tyres, but recovers OK

01/70: KR leads in to Turn 1
FM dropping back a little
MS making amazing progress on the first lap

02: KR, RB, PR, MS, GF, FA, FM, KR
MW down to P17
RK clips the kerb and spins but recovers OK

03: KR, RB, PR, MS, FA, GF, FM, KR
KR fastest lap 1:36.176
MW has pulled his Williams off track and retired
JB passes DC for P8
FA pushing hard to pass MS for P4

04: KR f/lap 1:35.341
FA makes a move on MS but he’s pushed wide and has to back off
FA makes a great move around the outside of MS and takes P4

05/70: KR, RB, PR, FA, MS, GF, JB, FM
KR f/lap 1:34.425
PdlR passes RB for P2
VL spins but recovers

06: The rain has started to fall again
RB pits from P3 – he’s going for intermediates!
TM runs wide, over a huge bump
JB now up to P5, right on the tail of MS

07: PR f/lap 1:34.289
FA f/lap 1:34.105
Nice clean move by JB to pass MS for P4

08: CK spins off in Turn 3, backwards across the gravel – he’s out
FM spins too

09: PR is ~10secs behind KR, but KR’s expected to make an early stop

10/70: KR, PR, FA, JB, MS, GF, DC, FM; Retirements: SY, MW, CK
FM runs wide again, losing P8 to NH
GF is just 0.5s behind MS, and FA is ~1s behind PR

11: JB f/lap 1:33.664

13: JT is passed by both SS and RK; VL is next to have a go
Ferrari are getting ready for a pit stop
FM pits from P10 – he takes full wet tyres

14: The rain seems to be getting worse
VL and JT are battling over P14
RB runs wide but recovers

15/70: VL and JT still fighting but it looks like VL has finally secured P14

16: GF is still harrying MS for P5

17: PR pits from P2
GF passes MS but they collide and MS’s front wing is broken – replay shows it was MS wiggling that caused it but another replay shows GF rubbing a tyre against MS a lap earlier

18: JB pits from P3
MS pits for a new nose and switches to intermediate tyres

19: GF has slid off, across the gravel – he tries to rejoin but he’s punctured the rear right
RK spins and loses his front wing – he’ll have to take it easy on the way back to the pits

20/70: The track is clearly getting more and more slippery, and there’s lots of standing water
FA, KR, PR, JB, DC, RB, NH, MS
RK makes it back to the BMW pits

21: GF has stopped on track – apparently the rear wing was broken

22: NR has gone off – he’s still in his car as it’s lifted away by a crane!

23: FA has just set fastest sector 2 – it must be drying out again

24: FA f/lap 1:33.498 – the previous fastest lap (JB’s) was on lap 11!

25/70: FA, KR, PR, JB, RB, DC, NH, MS; Retirements: SY, MW, CK, GF, NR
RS pits from P9 – intermediate tyres
FA is closing in to lap MS :)
Despite the blue flags, MS makes it hard for FA to pass

26: FA is setting fastest sector times – is he pitting soon?

27: KR just ran into the back of VL! Looks like VL backed off and KR just ploughed through him – debris everywhere!
Safety Car deployed
PR pits from P2
RB pits from P4

28[SC]: FA pits from P1; DC pits too
VL somehow makes it back to the pits but he has no rear wing so he’s out

29[SC]: FA, JB, PR, RB, NH, DC, MS, RS
Retirements: SY, MW, CK, GF, NR, VL, KR
The marshals are still clearing the debris as the SC leads the field around

30/70[SC]: The wrecked McLaren is moved away by a crane
TM pits from P14

31[SC]: SC in at the end of this lap
FA starts bunching the cars up, ready for the restart
SC enters the pits

32: Contact in Turn 1 – RS and FM – both recover
MS spins in T2 and has to wait for a gap in the traffic
FM is playing the usual Ferrari game and ignoring blue flags, baulking the lead cars!

33: Thanks to FM’s poor driving, FA has opened a 8.8s lead over JB

34: FA f/lap 1:33.242
JB personal f/lap 1:33.556
Will they switch to dry tyres soon? There’s still water off line, but the racing line is mainly dry
FA slowing! No, he’s picked up the pace again

35/70: JB f/lap 1:32.954
RB is being held up by RS – RS is a lap down and should move out the way

36: FA f/lap 1:32.470
RS finally lets RB through
RK is pressuring FM for P8

37: JB f/lap 1:32.440
JB is now 5.4s behind FA, slowly catching him

38: RK all over FM … and passes for P8

39: Pit-car radio for SS – he wants dry tyres but the team say stay out for 2 more laps – apparently there’s another big rain cloud coming
MS f/lap 1:31.787

40/70: FA, JB, PR, RB, NH, DC, MS, RK
RS set to pass FM, and MS is having a go at DC
MS passes DC for P6
SS pits, despite being told to stay out … although the pit-car radio is delayed, so maybe that was 2 laps?

41: SS exits the pits on dry tyres … and immediately ran wide in Turn 1
JB f/lap 1:31.489
FM lets team leader MS lap him
SS has spun and grazed the wall

42: FA’s lead is 2.5s over JB
FA, JB, PR, RB, NH, MS, DC, RK
MS f/lap 1:29.053, and he’s now 1.2s behind NH

43: The front runners are moving off line to find some water to save their tyres
MS tries to take NH in T1 but NH stays ahead
FM pits – more intermediate tyres
Honda preparing for a pit stop – dry tyres for JB?

44: MS makes the same move on NH but makes it sticks this time
SS pits again – he’s gone back to intermediates

45/70: JB is 0.7s behind FA
MS f/lap 1:28.985 – he’s 1.6s behind RB and ~2s/lap faster than anyone else

46: RK pits from P8 – no tyre change, just fuel – he’s keeping the same inters on

47: JB pits – no new tyres, just fuel, and a small adjustment for the front wing
MS pits too – no new tyres either
JB will probably have to stop again for fuel (whereas MS won’t) but there’s a fair chance of a weather change and therefore a stop for tyres anyway

48: JT runs wide, just missing DC

49: RS pits from P8

50/70: JB f/lap 1:28.077 – he’s 16s behind FA now, and they’ve both got to stop once more
JT pits – dry tyres, but there’s still a threat of another downpour

51: FA personal f/lap 1:29.408
JB f/lap 1:27.884
RB pits from P4 – dry tyres for JB’s teammate

52: FA pits from P1 – dry tyres
JB now leads the Grand Prix
FA struggling through Turn 1 but gets going again
PdlR pits – dry tyres too
Looks like a right-rear failure (wheel nut?) for FA and he’s off into the tyre wall!

53: JB f/lap 1:27.786
JB, NH, MS, PR, RB, DC, RK, RS, FM; Retirements: SY, MW, CK, GF, NR, VL, KR, FA

54: ITV-F1 are already talking about JB’s first F1 victory — please don’t do a Murray!
DC pits from P6 – dry tyres

55/70: JB pits from P1 – more front wing adjustment – dry tyres
NH in P2 is still on inters
PR f/lap 1:27.540
ITV-F1 interview with FA – drive shaft failure

56: NH pits from P2 – he rejoins behind MS
PR f/lap 1:25.614

57: JB f/lap 1:25.995 – his lead over MS is ~10.7s

58: JB f/lap 1:25.143, opening the gap to 13.3s

59: PR is catching MS at ~1s/lap but he’s 8.5s behind

60/70: JB, MS, PR, NH, RB, DC, RK, RS
Retirements: SY, MW, CK, GF, NR, VL, KR, FA
Track temperature 29°C; air 20°C; wind 0.2m/s; humidity 81%

61: JB’s lead now just over 20secs
FM pits from P9

62: JB’s lap time 1:25.359; MS 1:28.396
Hopefully the Honda will hold together

63: PR looks at passing MS in to Turn 1 but MS stays ahead – the gap as the pass the timing beam is 0.0secs

64: MS’s tyres are looking pretty slick, although he’s actually on intermediates
PR has another go on the main straight but the Ferrari stays ahead
FM f/lap 1:25.106

65/70: Third time lucky for PdlR? No, he can’t pass MS

66: MS cuts the chicane under pressure from PR
He’s supposed to let PR past but instead he makes it look like he’ll let him through and them slams the door on him!
MS should be investigated for that – dangerous and stupid!
FM f/lap 1:24.235

67: PR continues to push MS
MS cuts the chicane again, but this time he finally lets PR take P2
Now NH is looking to pass the ex-world champion

68: NH tries to pass in to T1 but MS keeps P3
FM f/lap 1:23.516
JT is off the circuit and his Toyota is on fire
Looks like MS is slowing – he must have hit NH

69: MS pits – those tyres are bald! (Will the FIA care?)
The FIA TV coverage is still replaying the MS incidents, but JB is closing in on his first F1victory

70/70 – final lap: JB has 37.5sec lead over PdlR

YES, YES, YES! Jenson Button wins the Hungarian Grand Prix! :)

First F1 victory for Jenson and first time on the podium for Pedro de la Rosa (and BMW Sauber).

Jenson’s dad looks like he’s had a good cry :)

Boy, the Japanese anthem is depressing … and it’s disappointing that TSN ended their coverage so quickly.

Post-race interviews:
JB: “Wow, what a day!”; “it’s taken so many years to get here, but we made it”; “if my voice sounds funny, I’ve been screaming a lot” :) “I didn’t want the race to end”; “the best feeling”
PdlR: “I forgot I had a spin on the formation lap”
NH: “He [MS] is not so easy to overtake”

Next race: Turkey in 3 weeks (Aug 25-27).

  2. Robert Kubica has been disqualified from the results of the Hungarian Grand Prix after his BMW Sauber was found to be underweight following the race. Kubica had finished seventh on his Formula One debut.

Stewards praised the “assistance and cooperation” they received from the BMW Sauber team, who proved that Kubica’s car was inadvertently 2 kilograms below the minimum requirement because of “excessive and unexpected tyre wear (and therefore weight loss) through continued use of wet-weather tyres in comparison to the accustomed and anticipated rate of wear of dry tyres.”

The stewards nevertheless had no choice but to exclude the car as it did not comply with Article 4.1 of the Technical Regulations. BMW Sauber did not contest the decision. It means Felipe Massa moves up to seventh place, with Michael Schumacher now classified eighth, despite not finishing the race.

The point Schumacher scores means he is now just ten behind Fernando Alonso in the drivers’ championship standings, while Ferrari are only seven behind Renault in the race for the constructors’ crown.

  4. Of course that begs the question where is the penalty for Schumacher’s dangerous/illegal driving?

  5. Den Whitton on Sun, 6th Aug 2006 10:19 pm
  6. Webber’s Willams is such a bucket of bolts. Has he finished any races this year? I’ll be glad when he changes teams.
