Date night

Kerri and I had a night out last night, just the two of us, which is unusual – when we go out it’s normally with Andy & Renee. We looked at the restaurants taking part in Winterlicious and the Beer Bistro jumped out … for the obvious reason (beer!), but also because the food has always been good when we’ve been there before.

We sat by the kitchen, watching Brian Morin and his team work. I’m sure Kerri will write more in her blog, but here’s what I recall, with help from their menu: Kerri started with a St.Ambroise Oatmeal Stout with beer-cured & smoked salmon, and I had a Sammy SmithsWinter Welcome with the wild mushroom soup. Kerri gave me her oatmeal stout to finish off with my gnocchi; I don’t remember what she had with her steak though. With dessert (apple crumble for me, chocolate mousse for Kerri) we ordered a bottle of Quelque Chose, a cherry beer that’s served warm! Unfortunately it took a little longer than anticipated so we were well into our desserts by the time it arrived, but they gave us some strawberry ice cream (made with Früli, a strawberry beer) to try with the Quelque Chose.

Somehow we managed to roll out of there (it felt like we had to roll!) and headed off to the Varsity cinema in the Manulife Centre, intent on seeing Casino Royale but it was sold out so instead we went for Pan’s Labyrinth. We both vaguely remember hearing good things about the film (it has 6 Academy Award nominations) but neither of us knew/remembered that one of those nominations was for best foreign language film. It was OK but I thought it was a bit over the top at times and the story seemed to skip some important parts (e.g. some characters disappeared as quickly as they appeared); Kerri liked it though.

I think it was about -15°C (ignoring the windchill, which is easier said than done) when we made it out onto the street, and apparently it’s going to be at least as cold for the next few days.

  2. Sounds like a fantastic dinner. I had some flat Guinness and used it as a steak marinade on the weekend. It tasted great, but I overcooked the steak.

It’s been too long since I’ve seen you two. We’ll have to remedy this.
