At the third stroke
Reminder: Summer Time for most of N.America starts next weekend, three weeks ahead of usual.
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 extended Daylight Saving Time in the U.S. beginning in 2007, though Congress retained the right to revert to the 1986 law should the change prove unpopular or if energy savings are not significant. Going from 2007 forward, Daylight Saving Time in the U.S. [and Canada]:
- begins at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March and
- ends at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November
In most of the countries of Western Europe, including the countries that are members of the EU, Daylight Saving Time:
- begins at 1:00 a.m. GMT on the last Sunday of March and
- ends at 1:00 a.m. GMT on the last Sunday of October

I don’t understand why we don’t just stay on DST all year round. I really really don’t get it. In the winter, it gets dark around 5pm. So…businesses still operating till 5:30 or 6 have to turn their lights on and the heat up earlier. Businesses open all day have to turn their stuff on earlier than they would if we were on DST. The argument that it would get brighter later in the morning doesn’t really work, since start of business would occur around 9 or 10, well after sunrise on either Time system. I’ve heard this has something to do with farmers getting an extra hour…but like, don’t they just follow their own work hours anyway? Businesses dealing with them directly should alter their own schedules. Why force this EST crap on the rest of us?
I know I’m probably missing the bigger picture here. Somebody PLEASE explain it to me.
I wish Bush would have decided to extend this into January, instead of by just a few weeks. I hate having to change my clocks back in the fall.
Check your *NIX system is ready with this:
% date --date="Mar 25 15:00:00 UTC 2006"
% date --date="Mar 25 15:00:00 UTC 2007"
and you should see the first one says EST and the latter says EDT … assuming you’re in a region that’s affected by the change!
Also, short note@ http://www.blogto.com/city/2007/03/daylight_savings_another_millenium_bug/index.php
I blame it on Al Gore global warming!
DST patches for Palm PDAs – looks like most models are affected.
Who thought it was a good idea to mess with this, Mr Bush???
