We sprung forward and the world didn’t end

We made it into the new DST and the world didn’t explode, mostly thanks to my preparations, I’m sure :)

Let’s review the status of stuff, in the order that I notice things:

  • Linux server: OK – even tasks normally scheduled for 2am were run (as happens every time we move to summer time)
  • cable box (digital TV converter + PVR): both OK
  • blog software: needed manual adjustment – I think it’s poor design that WordPress asks how many hours difference to UTC rather than asking for our timezone :( [Needed to do this for each of our blogs]
  • home phones: needed manual adjustment
  • PDA: OK
  • Windows 2000 PC: still on Standard Time despite the patches applied yesterday – maybe that was because I hibernated it overnight rather than shutting down, or maybe the patch simply didn’t work. :( Tried logging out and then logging back in, but that just caused it to reboot! Even after that, it’s still on EST. Re-run TZedit.exe – looks like it’s got the wrong dates for the change over. Re-enter the right info; re-select the TZ in Control Panel; now we’re in EDT, where we should be.
  • Outlook: at first glance, it looks OK; I’ll check the appointments in detail on Monday, when I can compare it to the printed copy I made on Friday.
  • digital camera: OK – I don’t understand how it can be (I’m sure I’ve had to manually adjust it for DST/EST changes in the past) so maybe it’s been in DST all through winter?
  • Xbox: still on EST when first turned on – the Internet Time Sync* hadn’t had a chance to do its thing – give it a few minutes … no change. I manually moved it forward an hour and it was OK, but when I turned Time Sync on again it, it jumped back to EST! Guess I’ll have to leave auto-sync off for now. [REMINDER]
[*In XBMC, you can enable it via Settings->Profiles->Appearance->Region and giving it the IP address of a Time Server Host; I'm using chime.utoronto.ca @ 128.100.102.201]
  • Windows XP laptop (work = patched): OK
  • Windows XP laptop (home = unpatched): OK too
  • coffee machine (yes, really!): it’s been on summer time all winter :)
  • cellphone: still on EST; auto-sync is turned on and I thought calling it or making a call from it might get it to sync, but that didn’t work, so I ended up resetting the time manually.
