Australian Grand Prix – Practice

Check my earlier post about the rule changes for the 2007 season.
A wet 1st practice session in Melbourne; Alonso was quickest in the first practice with 1:29.214
2nd practice was drier but a few spins – the fact that there are lots of white lines (because the circuit uses normal roads) doesn’t help.

The new drivers are doing quite well – Hamilton is up with the front runners.
The McLaren cars are the nicest looking, I think, and it’s obviously quick.
It’s started to drizzle a little and some drivers are starting to run a little wide.
Alonso’s still quickest – 1:28.040
Kovalainen parks his Renault – looks like a mechanical problem (Update: apparently it was the fuel pump)
And now Barrichello spun off and kissed the barriers, bringing out the red flags.
The red flags are withdrawn but there’s no rush for the cars to rejoin the circuit – it looks like the wind has picked up
Actually, it looks like the red flags are still being shown even though the clock is still ticking.
Liuzzi spins the Toro Rosso – he & teammate Speed are propping up the bottom of the timing chart
Massa goes fastest – 1:27.763
With just 15 minutes left, the drivers seem to be pushing even harder
Massa 1:27.353; P2=Heidfeld, 3=Alonso, 4=Hamilton, 5=Kubica, 6=Fisichella, 7=Raikkonen, 8=Coulthard, 9=Button, 10=Trulli.
5mins left
Hamilton jumps to P2
3mins left
Telemetry shows Fisichella’s Renault turning just over 19,000 RPM … but they’re supposed to be capped at 19k, I thought?
Fisichella pulls off
Raikkonen now P2
Raikkonen (Ferrari) is stuck behind (McLaren) so he’s not going to take P1
Session ends
