April Fool’s

How many April Fool’s Day jokes have you spotted so far? Here’s the ones I’ve encountered:

  • ThinkGeek.com:
  • LiveJournal: news of upcoming changes – “you’ll soon find that every user on the site — whether or not you’ve added them to your Friends list — will be designated as a member of your broad circle of friends, so you can nudge them to update their journals if you want to hear from them.”
  • UpdateF1.com reports that the FIA (the governing body of Formula One racing) has introduced a new rule:
“Following the extinguishing of the starting lights all cars shall proceed towards the first corner at racing speed; on reaching the corner, those on the left of the grid from the drivers point of view shall take the left hand ‘lane’, with drivers on the right of the grid taking the right ‘lane’.” The idea is to keep the cars in two neat, orderly lines for the first corner

  • Astronomy Picture of the Day had a go at an April Fools prank but today’s photo of “Americans Defeat Russians in First Space Quidditch Match” is really weak.
  • Over at CodeBetter.com there are some ideas for .Net programs to annoy people … as if we need any more! :)
  • With all the craziness in the world, it’s hard to spot the April Fools story on the BBC News website, and it’s now gone midday in the UK (traditionally the end of the foolery), but they do have reports of photographs of a mummified fairy and a page about April Fool’s Day which includes the classic spaghetti-tree spoof – if you’ve never heard of it, you have to check it out but remember this was shown 50 years ago on Panorama (a well-respected programme) on the BBC.
  • IwantOneOfThose.com is an excellent geek store in the UK (where I bought my inflatable Xmas tree many years ago [not to be confused with our USB Xmas tree!]); they have a RoboGirlfriend on sale for only £500 – I’m sure there were some geeks breaking open their piggy banks this morning.
  • ThePirateBay.org (a favourite site of mine) announced it is “moving some of our servers to the North-Korean Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. After lenghty discussions with the leader of North Korea Kim Jong-Il we have decided to start a cooperation.”
  • TattooYourToddler.com is apparently a joke site, but I bet there are people who think it’s a good idea because children should be able to express themselves too.

Wikipedia has a list of this year’s pranks which I expect will continue to grow over the next few hours, but leave me a comment if you spot other good ones out there.

  8. Yes, but they used lyrics from Bob Dylan’s song and worked it into the plot. The “Frakking Duh” part gives it away as being a reference to the Season 3 finale :P

  19. I missed Google off my list … but everyone knows they always have something for April Fool’s Day, and they put a lot of effort in to it. This year it’s “Google TiSP (BETA), our new FREE in-home wireless broadband service.
