F1 update between races

It’s another week until the Hungarian Grand Prix, but a lot is happening in the world of Formula One:

  • Following the heated interchange before they took to the podium in Germany last weekend, “Fernando Alonso has apologised to Felipe Massa for accusing the Brazilian of instigating contact with him when he passed him for the lead of the European Grand Prix with four and a half laps remaining.” [source: ITV-F1]
  • The spying scandal continues; “the World Motorsport Council (WMSC) said there was “insufficent evidence” it had affected this year’s title race” [source: BBC] but Ferrari “reacted with fury” saying “This decision legitimises dishonest behaviour in F1 and sets a very serious precedent” [source: BBC] Personally I think there has been / will be lots of partisan comments but if the (usually seen as pro-Ferrari) FIA decided not to punish McLaren, there must have been good reason. [WMSC decision]
  • “Japanese driver Sakon Yamamoto will drive for Spyker in the remaining seven races of the Formula One season.” [source: BBC] Markus Winkelhock filled the seat left vacant by Christijan Albers’ departure but he could only find funding for one race.
  • SpeedTV updated their article that said Scott Speed was leaving Toro Rosso – it now says he’s still there but that there are changes coming.
  • The FIA have announced the (provisional) F1 2008 calendar:
    16 Mar Australia
    23 Mar Malaysia
    6 Apr Bahrain
    27 Apr Spain
    11 May Turkey
