Strange outages

I’m on Facebook (yes I know, I’m 20 years too old to be on there!) and one of the better applications is called Server Monitor. In the past couple of days it’s reported that my website has offline in the early hours of the morning (0146-0224 yesterday and 0218-0237 this morning) but my server’s log doesn’t report any problems (no reboots, power failures) and a separate monitoring tool didn’t report anything.

It could be that the Server Monitor had an outage, in which case it wouldn’t be able to check my site, but then I also use it to monitor the badminton club’s website (as I’m the webmaster for that too) and it didn’t report any problems with that one.

I wonder if there’s a networking problem? If my Internet connection is interrupted (due to maintenance, failure, whatever) then my site would appear to be offline and yet my server wouldn’t see any problem … but then the second montoring tool should notice it.

I’m stumped as to what to do next. Then again, I’ve still not decided if I’m going to continue hosting our website, blogs & photos – there’s no longer a real technical challenge in doing it (because I’ve done it for long enough to have learned most of what I could learn), so it’s really down to whether I want to spend the time & money replacing the dead server or pay for a hosting service. Given how much time I spend in front of a screen, I’m leaning towards the outsourcing option if only to give me back a few hours each week (and I could still tinker with my Linux server when I felt the urge).

  2. And as if on cue, the UPS starts beeping as there’s the usual morning power spike/drop – it only lasts a second but I’m glad all my toys are protected.
