New format for Qualifying in 2016 F1 season

The rules for each Qualifying session:

  • Q1
    • 16 minutes
    • After 7 minutes, slowest driver eliminated
    • Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag
    • 7 drivers eliminated, 15 progress to Q2
  • Q2
    • 15 minutes
    • After 6 minutes, slowest driver eliminated
    • Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag
    • 7 drivers eliminated, 8 progress to Q3
  • Q3
    • 14 minutes
    • After 5 minutes, slowest driver eliminated
    • Slowest driver eliminated every 1 minute 30 seconds thereafter until the chequered flag
    • 2 drivers left in final 1 minute 30 seconds

  1. BBC report Lewis Hamilton said: “I don’t really feel like it is going to change much. I hope it’s a surprise for us all and I hope it does.” Felipe Massa, however, said the plan could cause “chaos”.

  2. BBC reports “Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone says the introduction of a new elimination qualifying format will be delayed until the fifth race of the season. He said the software controlling the new system would not be ready for the start of the season on 18-20 March.”
