Scotchy goodness
Two important dates for next year’s diary:
- Robbie Burns Scotch Tasting @ C’est What? on January 23rd
- Spirit of Toronto at Roy Thomson Hall on May 10th.
Spirit of Toronto
Last year’s Spirit of Toronto (well, 18 months ago when the event was last held) was great fun, so we got our tickets as soon as they were released.
Unfortunately this year’s Spirit of Toronto started just like the previous one – late. There was zero communication to let us know why or for how long it had been delayed – we were just left standing in a thirsty, frustrated crowd. Once the doors were opened (~10mins late) we we vaguely steered towards the coat check desk, which we didn’t need … except it turned out that was where we were to pick up glasses and programmes. At least last year there were multiple (2 or 3) places we could do this, but this year it was one single, badly placed bottleneck which very quickly turned into a huddle rather a queue. Anyway, we each grabbed our Glencairn glass (quite nice) and programme, and headed for the far end of the room to escape the crowd.
As with last time, we were too busy sampling and chatting to go to any of the seminars … in fact I didn’t even look at what the topics were until just now!
I can’t list everything I tasted, but I do recall some:
- Isle of Jura 21 Year Old and Superstition
- Lagavulin 16 Year Old
- Macallan Fine Oak 10, 15 & 17 Year Olds and Cask Strength
- Magic Cask & The Peat Monster, neither of which were particularly outstanding
- Scapa 10 Year Old
The food, provided by Daniel et Daniel, was very good, just like last year and the large number of free bottles of water was a nice contrast to the Beer Festival.
I’m sure we’ll go again next year, but I just wish the organisers would get their act together and open on time – keeping us from our scotch is not good!
Spirit of Toronto
Andy & I have our tickets for the Spirit of Toronto – we went last year (well, November 2005) and it was really good fun. I think we’ll be joined by a couple of friends, but either way we’re bound to have a good time.
Ups and Downs (Top2-2007.05)
It’s been an odd week … and it’s still only Tuesday! So far my Top (i.e. most extreme) 2 Ups and Downs have been:
- ^^ Scotch night with Andy
- vv Being beaten by the latest WordPress upgrade
Honourable mentions include watching Hamster’s accident on Top Gear (been waiting ages to see this) and a change in direction at work (major changes for my project).
Yeah, definitely an odd week so far.
