On this day (Top2-2007.13)

Top 2 stories from today’s (historical) news which I wasn’t aware of:

  • 1945: Argentina declared war on Germany.
I didn’t realise they did this … and so near the end. Then again Norway declared war on Japan on July 6th 1945!
  • 2007: SAS enter Iran and free the 15 sailors & marines being held captive … no, wait – Maggie would have done that days ago but Mr.Blur is still asking nicely if the Iranians will release them please, or he’ll have to ask again.

In other news, the deed is done! :)

Live and learn (Top2-2007.12)

Posted by paul

I missed last week’s Top 2 Tuesday post because I was just snowed under at work and then too tired in the evening. I was half expecting to skip it today too because it’s been such a crazy day, but I thought I’d share a couple of Things I Learned Thanks To The Internet this week:

  1. If MySpace were a country, it would be the 11th-largest in the world (between Japan and Mexico), or that if someone in China says “you’re one in a million” that means there are 1,300 people just like you! These and other interesting facts can be found @ The Fischbowl
  2. Tech support in the Middle Ages was just as painful as it is today:

I also discovered (thanks to someone who posted the solution to their problem) that the screen guard on my PDA was actually the cause of my problems!

Couple of funny things I found this evening:

  2. “Just about all of the systems I’ve written about here share quite a few things in common: they are poorly designed, poorly coded, and even more poorly documented. Today, I’m happy to share with you a system that doesn’t quite fit in with all the rest. It’s actually very sound software and, most of all, it’s well documented. Very, very well documented.:

OK, given that was bit of a cop-out for this week’s Top 2 list, how about a brace of interesting links?

  1. Did you know yesterday was Toronto’s 173rd birthday? Nor did I until I found this post in BlogTO which in turn led me to “The real story of how Toronto got its name“.
  2. It’s been really cold for the past day or so; so cold that Environment Canada’s forecast for Toronto said to expect “Wind chill values between minus 30 and minus 39 this morning.” There was even a handy weather guide posted (on LiveJournal) in reply to someone asking what to wear when visiting Toronto this week. :)

Blog-keeping (Top2-2007.09)

Posted by paul

This weekend it’s time to get my (virtual) house in order and work on our multiple blogs, so my Top 2 WordPress tasks for this weekend are:

  1. merge the software that we use for our blogs, so there’s just one set of stuff to update, then…
  2. update the WordPress software, plugins and themes

I also need to make sure everything (not just our blogs) are backed up properly, in readiness for the madness that is the early change to DST. Ugh!
