Mercedes takes over Brawn F1 team

As many people expected, Mercedes have invested in the Brawn team. [source: BBC news]

Mercedes will buy 75% of Brawn in partnership with an Abu Dhabi investment company but will continue as McLaren’s engine partner until 2015.

This is great news for the Brawn team, but I wonder what impact it will have on McLaren.

As part of a deal that will see the McLaren Group buy back Mercedes’s 40% shareholding by 2011, the German company will continue to supply free engines and sponsorship to the team for at least the next six years. The team’s official name will remain Vodafone McLaren Mercedes.

Will Brawn Mercedes Grand Prix get preferential treatment or will they and McLaren get the same engines?

As for drivers, it looks like Mercedes Grand Prix will have Nico Rosberg and probably Nick Heidfeld (or maybe Timo Glock); as for McLaren, they’re retaining Lewis Hamilton and it seems likely that he’ll be joined by Jenson Button, although there are still rumours of Kimi Raikkonen (who is currently without a drive after being dumped by Ferrari).

Just because there’s no racing until March, don’t expect F1 news to go quiet! 🙂
