If You Had $2000 to Spend on Photographic Gear

Over on the Digital Photography School blog they asked “If I gave you $2000 to spend on camera gear – what would you buy?

Well, I’ve had my Canon Rebel XTi for about 2.5 years and I’d really like to move up to the Canon 7D – the advertised price is around $1400, which means about $1650 with taxes etc. (PhotoPrice.ca has a handy comparison chart of what it really costs to have it in your hands!)

Alternatively, I’d really like to pick up the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM lens – advertised price $1270 so just under $1500 really.

Kerri bought me a Speedlite 430EX II (flash) recently, and I have a decent tripod, monopod and GorillaPod, as well as a new backpack (Lowepro Fastpack 350) and I even bought Lightroom 3 when it came out, so I’m not sure what I’d spend the remaining budget on. Maybe the BG-E7 Battery Grip for the 7D and some larger memory cards.

If the question allowed me to spend some of the budget on something other than “gear”, then it’s a bit easier – printing & framing some of my shots, and maybe another workshop.

So what about you? What’s on your wishlist?

  1. Im slowly realizing that its not equipment thats holding me back but rather the limited amount of time I spend shooting and processing. If I had $2K that could only be spent on gear I’d probably get something like an 85mm 1.4 but if I could spend it on anything that could be used for photography I’d probably by a mac air and/or some workshops

  2. I agree Rob – I think the biggest things (for me) are practice, shooting with other people and workshops. I attended Chris Marquardt’s urban photography workshop in summer and I’m watching his website (http://chrismarquardt.com/workshops.php) to see what next year’s topic will be – it was great fun and I learned a lot!

  3. Picked up the BG-E7 battery grip at Aden for less than half the price of anywhere else! Thanks again to PhotoPrice.ca for finding the deals!

I also got a new wrist strap as my old one isn’t big enough; new one is a Nikon strap but it seems to work OK with my Canon gear 🙂

  4. I’ve signed up for Chris Marquardt’s urban photography workshop again. Chris said it’ll cover some of the same material (which’ll be a useful reminder) and some new material (can’t think what), so it’s bound to be great!
