Grand Prix of Belgium – Qualifying

The teams are back after their mandatory summer break. Just to recap, HAM won the Grand Prix of Germany ahead of the Red Bull duo of RIC and VES. That put HAM 19 points ahead of ROS in the Drivers’ Championship, who in turn is 65 ahead of RIC, and Mercedes 159 ahead of Red Bull.

Here are the news headlines since Germany:

  • “Renault’s 19-year-old reserve driver Esteban Ocon has replaced Rio Haryanto at Manor” [BBC]
  • “Mercedes’ statement about the likely extent of the penalty suggests he will be taking two each of a new turbocharger and a new MGU-H, the motor-generator that recovers energy from the rear axle. That would amount to a total of 30 grid places of penalty, according to the rules, but a driver can drop no further than the back of the grid.” [BBC]
Expectation is he’ll take three full power units before the race, coming to a total of about 75 grid spots.
  • ERI has a 10 grid drop for a new turbo
  • ALO has a 35 grid drop for a whole new power unit following a water leak in FP1

Oh no! Looks like the PVR failed to record Qualifying! 🙁

Provisional grid: ROS, VES, RAI, VET, RIC, PER, HUL, BOT, BUT, MAS, GRO, MAG, PAL, SAI, WEH, NAS, OCO, GUT*, KVY, ERI*, HAM*, ALO*.
*GUT was given a 5 grid spot penalty for impeding WEH; ERI, HAM and ALO all received penalties for engine changes.
