Grand Prix of Monaco – Race

henman.ca

Monaco is such an impossible track for overtaking, Qualifying is so important – last year there was just one pass. That’s not good news for Hamilton.
Qualifying ended with the order: RAI, VET, BOT, VER, RIC, SAI, PER, GRO, BUT*, VAN*, KVY, HUL, MAG, HAM, MAS, OCO, PAL, STR, WEH, ERI.
*BUT has 15 grid spot penalty for multiple engine part changes.
*VAN has a 3 grid spot penalty following his collision with MAS in Spain.

Provisional grid: RAI, VET, BOT, VER, RIC, SAI, PER, GRO, KVY, HUL, MAG, VAN, HAM, MAS, OCO, PAL, STR, WEH, ERI, BUT.
Looks like BUT will start from the pit lane

There’s a minute’s silence to remember the victims of last week’s Manchester bombing, then the national anthem.

So will Ferrari let their boys race or will they insist RAI lets VET take P1? As a team, they get the same points whatever their order, but VET is well ahead in the Drivers’ Championship.

Air temperature 26°C; track 50°C; just like Quali.

Even though BUT is starting from the pits, he has to start on the same set of ultra-softs that he set his best Q2 time.
WEH and ERI are starting on super-soft tyres; everyone else on ultras.

RAI leads the grid (except BUT) away on the formation lap
Radio for BUT from ALO (who is at Indy) – ALO says “take care of my car”; BUT replies “I’m going to pee in your seat” 🙂

01/78: Looks like everyone made it through Turn 1 safely
VER defending from his teammate

02: RAI, VET, BOT, VER, RIC, SAI, PER, GRO, MAG, HUL
WEH and BUT both pit; both switch to super-softs; looks like WEH’s release was unsafe – BUT had to lift to avoid a collision
VET has already opened a visible gap over BOT
HAM has passed VAN for P12 – replay shows he did that off the start

03: RAI fastest lap 1:17.914

05/78: RAI f/lap 1:17.072
BOT is over 2secs behind VET

06: VET f/lap 1:17.044
Radio from HAM complaining “it’s hard to get close to these guys”; he’s told “our race comes later”

08: Incident involving WEH and BUT under investigation for unsafe release
RAI f/lap 1:16.666 \m/

10/78: RAI, VET, BOT, VER, RIC, SAI, PER, GRO, MAG, HUL, KVY, HAM, VAN, MAS, OCO, PAL, STR, ERI, WEH, BUT
VET f/lap 1:16.421

12: Yawn – nothing’s going to happen until someone hits the barrier or there’s a pit stop

13: 5-sec penalty for WEH for unsafe release

15: VET f/lap 1:16.197

16: Smoke from HUL’s Renault; he finally parks just before the tunnel

17: PER pits from P7 – new nose – rejoins P16

18: Marshals have cleared HUL’s car

20/78: RAI, VET, BOT, VER, RIC, SAI, GRO, MAG, KVY, HAM, VAN, MAS, OCO, PAL, STR, PER, ERI, WEH, BUT; retirement: HUL

22: Closest battle is PER on the rear of newbie STR who’s in P15

24: Radio from HAM – “tyres are fine, grip is poor, car is sliding all over the place”

25/78: ERI cuts the swimming pool chicane
RAI closing on BUT to lap the McLaren

26: Radio from RAI complaining there’s no blue flags for BUT yet
Didn’t Charlie Whiting say they had to be within 1sec in order to get blue flags?

27: BUT lets the Ferrari duo lap him

28: VER nearly loses the tail in the swimming pool; cuts the chicane

30/78: order is unchanged

33: VER pits from P4; super-softs; reasonable stop (3.5sec); rejoins P6

34: BOT pits from P3; 2.7sec stop; rejoins P5, ahead of VER

35/78: RAI pits from P1; rejoins P3
RIC f/lap 1:16.117
Radio for PER – engine temps critical

36: RIC f/lap 1:16.093
ERI pits, which helps the front runners who were about to lap him

37: RIC f/lap 1:16.019
KVY pits, followed by OCO

38: VET f/lap 1:15.587
SAI pits, followed by MAG

39: VET f/lap 1:15.238
RIC pits from P2; rejoins P3
VET pushing as he’s told to pit

40/78: VET pits from P1; 3.1sec stop; rejoins just ahead of RAI
Radio from VER asking if RIC has stopped; told he (RIC) is now ahead of BOT and VER; VER’s reply is bleeped
Radio for OCO – puncture, rear left
OCO makes a second stop; tells the team “I didn’t touch anything”

41: BUT and GRO pit

42: Radio from RIC – frustrated behind Force India of OCO
STR pits

44: MAG makes 2nd stop; PAL pits too
VAN pits
Yet to stop: HAM … I think he’s the only one

45/78: VET, RAI, RIC, BOT, VER, HAM, SAI, GRO, KVY, VAN, PER, MAS, MAG, PAL, STR, ERI, OCO, WEH, BUT; retirement: HUL

46: Radio for HAM – “box, box”

47: HAM pits from P6; 2.7sec stop; rejoins P7

50/78: VET, RAI, RIC, BOT, VER, SAI, HAM, GRO, KVY, VAN, PER, MAS, MAG, PAL, STR, ERI, OCO, WEH*, BUT
*remember: 5-sec penalty for WEH for unsafe release

51: HAM closing on SAI; VER getting within attack range of BOT

54: Radio for BOT warning him of possible raised manhole cover at Turn 1

58: Radio from PER fuming that WEH blocked him as the Force India was lapping him

60/78: VET, RAI, RIC, BOT, VER, SAI, HAM, GRO, KVY, VAN, PER, MAS, MAG, PAL, STR, ERI, OCO, WEH, BUT; retirement: HUL
Someone is one their side just at the entrance to the tunnel!!
Safety Car deployed

61[SC]: VER pits
Looks like it’s WEH that’s on his side
The car is still on its side and I think WEH is still inside – if so, why haven’t they thrown the red flags?

62[SC]: Radio from WEH confirming he’s OK but he can’t get out; told to be patient
Replay shows BUT try to get inside WEH; contact puts WEH on edge and breaks BUT’s front left suspension
Radio from VET asking if WEH is OK

63[SC]: Finally the marshals are able to turn his car and WEH steps out of the Sauber
MAS pits

64[SC]: The tarmac at Turn 1 looks pretty bad; apparently it was resurfaced last night
PER pits
Radio from STR complaining he’s losing a lot of brake temp
Race control: lapped cars can overtake the SC

65/78[SC]: ERI passes the SC into Turn 1 and then heads straight into the barrier! D’oh!
That’s both Saubers out of the race

66[SC]: SC in at the end of this lap
Order for the restart: VET, RAI, RIC, BOT, VER, SAI, HAM, GRO, KVY, VAN, PER, MAS, MAG, PAL, STR, OCO; retirements: ERI, BUT, WEH, HUL

67: Green flags for the restart
BOT looks at RIC
RIC tags the barrier! Looks like he got away with it
VAN in the barrier at Turn 1 – now that’s both McLarens out
They should be able to clear VAN without the need for another SC

68: STR pits
VET is pulling away from RAI again
VER moving around, filling BOT’s mirrors
Radio for MAG telling him he can “push like an animal”

69: KVY past PER for P9 — that’s an actual pass on track! :O
Oh wait – was that because PER cut the chicane and had to give the place back?

70/78: VET, RAI, RIC, BOT, VER, SAI, HAM, GRO, KVY, PER, MAS, MAG, PAL, OCO, STR
Incident involving WEH and BUT will be investigated after the race
Radio for BOT – “if you’re comfortable, Strat 6”; BOT replies “does it look comfortable?”

71: PER dives inside KVY; hits KVY
KVY is slowing; he’s parked at Casino Square

72: PER pits
STR in the pits again; pushed into the garage

73: Delayed radio from PER – sounds like he’s blaming the crash on his team for telling him to make a setting change

74: Incident involving PER and KVY will be investigated after the race

75/78: VET, RAI, RIC, BOT, VER, SAI, HAM, GRO, MAS, MAG, PAL, OCO, PER; retirements: STR, KVY, VAN, ERI, BUT, WEH, HUL

76 = 3 laps left: PER f/lap 1:15.017
HAM closing up on the tail of SAI

77: PER f/lap 1:14.820
Radio from HAM – “the battle’s not over, guys; I’ll just take these points”

78 = last lap: VET has a comfortable 4sec lead over his teammate

VET takes the chequered flag

Provisional result: VET, RAI, RIC, BOT, VER, SAI, HAM, GRO, MAS, MAG; PAL, OCO, PER
DNF: STR, KVY, VAN, ERI, BUT, WEH, HUL
A couple of incidents yet to be investigated but they won’t change the points positions.

RAI parks next to VET but the Finn walks off without congratulating the race winner
As they prepare for the podium, RAI still doesn’t want to talk to VET

The new podium configuration has everyone a little confused
No anthems before the trophies are presented – that’s odd
The constructor’s trophy was the last to be presented – is that normal?
OK, now the anthems – nice to hear the Ferrari mechanics singing all the words
RAI still looks frustrated

Nico Rosberg is doing the interviews… eventually – seems very confused
VET: “a very intense race”
RAI: “second place doesn’t feel awful good”
RIC: “didn’t enjoy” hitting the wall at the restart

KVY: “He (PER) tried a desperate move and ended both our race”
PER: “Not a lot of room in Monaco”; “I saw a gap; went for it; we slightly touch”
Replay reinforces my belief that PER is totally at fault for that collision

  1. “Jenson Button’s Formula One career will end with a three-place grid penalty seemingly forever hanging over him after his collision with Pascal Wehrlein in Monaco.” [f1fanatic]
With the stewards handing the penalty and two superlicense penalty points to Button, who does not intend to return to the sport after this weekend’s cameo appearance, it appears that the former champion’s career will end with the grid penalty never being served.
As the penalty applies to the driver and not the car, Fernando Alonso will not be forced to serve this penalty upon his return to Formula One at the Canadian Grand Prix.

  2. “Sergio Perez has been hit with two penalty points on his superlicense but no grid penalty following his collision with Daniil Kvyat at Monaco.” [f1fanatic]
After investigating the incident, the stewards awarded Perez a ten-second post-race time penalty and two penalty points on his super license after finding that he was ‘predominately to blame’ for the collision.
Perez now has five points on his super license. Any driver who receives 12 points in any 12 month period will be banned from participating in the next grand prix.
