Grand Prix of Hungary – Qualifying

Thanks to a post-race penalty for the Alfa Romeo pair (RAI, GIO), HAM was moved up to P9 and KUB to P10 to make the points-paying results from Germany: VER, VET, KVY, STR, SAI, ALB, GRO, MAG, HAM, KUB with only 3 more cars making it to the end of the race (RAI, GIO, RUS). So the quick update to the points standings (which I last posted after the British GP) is that HAM is on 225 points, BOT 184, VER 162, VET 141, and LEC 120; Mercedes’ total is 409, Ferrari 261 and Red Bull 217.

Free Practice:

  1. FP1: HAM (1:17.233), VER, VET, GAS, MAG
KVY was sent out of the Toro Rosso garage with the heat shield still attached to his rear wing
GIO misjudged his turn and had to be pushed back a little in order to join the pit lane without hitting the pit wall
VER spun twice in the rain
BOT ended his session without setting a time when the team detected a misfire and decided they needed to make some engine changes
  2. FP2: GAS (1:17.854), VER, HAM, BOT, RIC
ALB touched the grass, lost the rear end of his Toro Rosso, spun into the tyre wall and brought out the red flags while they cleared his car
More rain so the drivers had another chance to run on intermediate tyres
  3. FP3: HAM (1:16.084), VER, VET, BOT, LEC
The session was shortened to 50mins due to a late start caused by the clean up of oil after an engine failure in the support (F2) race
BOT was surprised as he rushed up behind a slow-moving PER
