USA (COTA) Grand Prix – Qualifying

The biggest news since Japan has been confirmation that Red Bull exceeded the 2021 budget cap, although Whiny Spice continues to try to deflect and lessen the fact that they’ve broken a rule which means they had an advantage when they won last yet. (It seems that Red Bull classified designer and Chief Technical Officer, Adrian Newey, as an employee and the rules allow for the top 3 earning employees to be excluded, but Newey is actually a contractor and should be counted in the budget.)

The FIA did themselves no favours at the previous race: allowing a tractor onto the track in rain and poor visibility, reminiscent of Jules Bianchi’s fatal accident at the same circuit and similar conditions 8 years ago; there was confusion on the pit wall over how many points would be awarded per the new obviously-ambiguous rule; a lightning-fast “investigation” for a last-lap incident saw LEC being penalised and Red Bull handed a 1-2 finish. After the race, GAS was penalised for speeding under the red flag (and not for tweeting his frustrations at the FIA – no, definitely not for that).

COTA (Circuit of the Americas, although Canada and Mexico have their own so it’s a bit presumptuous to call it that) is the second US GP this season (Miami was in May) and next season it looks like there will be three!
